Southampton Recreation Association
Janet Harvey Trivette Playground
Dedicated June 8, 2008

THE JANET HARVEY TRIVETTE
Play Ground Dedication
June 8, 2008

We are pleased this afternoon to dedicate this playground in loving memory of Janet Harvey Trivette,
long-time supporter of the Southampton Recreation Association who died in November after a valiant
battle with cancer. Janet, mother of present coach Alex Trivette and Westwood coach and former
SRA swimmer Proctor Trivette, was particularly fond of Southampton, its swimmers and parents
with whom she laughed, played and served.

This afternoon -- Janet’s spirit lives here. Thank you family and friends who have come to honor and remember her.
In the days following her passing many of you helped fund the growing Janet Harvey Trivette Scholarship at
Randolph Macon College where Janet met her life partner and right hand George.
As of Wednesday that scholarship total stands at $216,284.

You have also honored Janet through your contributions to beautifying this playground.
The popcorn ribbon is vintage Trivette and acknowledges -- in our not so subtle way --
the human energy and financial stream the Trivette’s and their popcorn brought to SRA.

I would be remiss in not recognizing Anne Nelson Morck, Al Yancey, Andy Ferguson and the SRA board
for their behind-the-scenes work to make this playground a reality and, of course, to all of you who contributed.
And a special thank you to Board Member Jay Bush who worked tirelessly with the playground company
to design, order, schedule and implement the structures and improve this setting.
As we all know, SRA is basically a 1950’s rec center, but the people and sweat equity that resides here is all 21st century stuff.

What we are doing this afternoon is paying tribute to a woman who was active beyond words on behalf of this
organization, team and any other cause to which she was dedicated. For years she ran our head table –
and was a JRAC representative -- floating here and there always getting things done with a smile and in a
way that brought a smile to the faces of those around her. Janet was the ultimate Quartermaster,
counselor and den mother – making life easier for one and all.

Not yet completed but to be placed prominently will be a raised letter brass
dedication plaque. On it will be the words:

In loving memory of our friend, Janet Harvey Trivette.
May her playful spirit and laughter always be with us.

Through all the hustle and bustle that was Janet was husband George, the great enabler and comforter picking up all
that Janet left behind, be it popcorn machines or providing an extra dose of sanity so often needed.
So, on behalf of family and friends, thank you all for coming to acknowledge the
spirit, joy and life that was and remains Janet Trivette.
