Helpful Hints for Young Skaters from our Instructors
2007/2008

1. If you need to purchase skates, please seek advice from our instructors.  Buying them big with room to grow into is not the right idea.  Skates that have a snug fit give your child more confidence and control on the ice.

2. To break in new skates, let your child walk around in them at home using blade guards to protect the blades and your floors.

3. Come to class dressed and READY TO SKATE.  Put on skates with blade guards at home.   The air inside the rink is very cold.  Your child MUST have gloves for protection, and we recommend waterproof pants (bibs, snow pants, etc.) and a bike helmet for each class.   Blue jeans can be miserable, if wet, and also do not allow much flexibility.

4. Your child WILL get wet and cold!

5. Bringing a spare pair of gloves is good insurance for gloves that get soggy from spills on the ice.

6. The Tot Class is designed for the pre-school age child (at least 3 years old) who has never skated.  Your child must be able to stand alone on skates and not require any parental involvement in the class.  This class is held on a weekday afternoon.

7. The Pre-Alpha class is designed for school-age children, 5 years of age and older, who have no skating experience and can stand alone on skates.  In both the Tot and Pre-Alpha classes the children learn to glide, fall and get back up!

8. Please write your child's name in everything he/she wears to the rink, including blade guards.

9. Encourage your child to use the bathroom before leaving home.  Having to remove all that warm clothing for bathroom purposes in the middle of class is no fun.
