Office Hours & Activity Registration
Sue Elliott takes over office responsibilities this summer for Detta Jewett.
The office will have the following hours in May:
Open on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m.–12 p.m., through Wednesday, May 21.
Open on weekdays, 4–6:30 p.m., May 19–30.
Closed on Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day.
 June office hours will be announced soon.
 May office hours are the perfect time to pay your annual dues if you haven’t already and to
register for activities. You can also mail in dues and registrations (3201 Chellowe Road, Richmond, VA  23225),
with a check made payable to SRA. Payment is expected at time of registration.
There will be no refunds after sign-up unless there is someone on the waiting list who can fill your slot.
Sign up early to ensure you and your children have a space in the activities of your choice.
 



Summer Classes and Camps
Register during our Open House on Thursday, May 8, by mail or at the SRA
office .All classes and camps are open to SRA members first; if they don’t fill up,
non-members may participate for an additional $5/class.

Pilates for Adults
The Bon Air Pilates class at SRA will continue through the summer!
Pilates is a series of non-impact, non-aerobic, relaxing, gentle-but-effective exercises,
stretches and breathing techniques. Strengthen your abdominal, lower-back and
pelvic muscles while improving flexibility and overall muscle tone. $72.
 Dates & Times: Tuesdays & Thursdays, June 3–July 24, 8:45–9:45 a.m.

Origami for Adults
We are pleased to have Karmalita Bawar share her expertise and teach SRA
members the fun and creative art of origami. The children’s class will focus on
basic forms and children’s origami; participants will make airplanes, flowers and
eastern designs. The adult class will focus on basic forms and sample a few designs;
participants will make Christmas ornaments, flowers and maybe a simple ikebana
(Japanese flower arranging). $30.
 Children Class: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, August 4–15, 1–2 p.m.
 Adult Class: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, August 4–15, 12–1 p.m.

Stroke-specific Swim Clinics, Ages 8--14
Do you want to improve your technique in breaststroke and butterfly?
Lifelong SRA swimmer Stuart Ferguson is offering two small group stroke
clinics that will focus on understanding, developing and refining proper swim
technique of these difficult strokes. Stuart is a member of the United States National
Junior swim team and will be competing at Olympic trials this summer.
8 participants. $25 per clinic.
 Breaststroke Clinic: Sunday, June 15, 5–6 p.m.
 Butterfly Clinic: Sunday, June 22, 5–6 p.m.

Arts and Crafts, Ages 10--15
Calling all budding artists! Lisa Craig, a local art teacher with over 25 years
of experience will lead a creative week of fun-filled activities.
Explore mixed media projects—including one where you’ll turn an old shoe
into a sculpture! All materials provided, except the old shoe. $40.
 Dates & Times: June 16–20, 1–2 p.m.

Classes with Bon Air Dance & Pilates
Our local dance school, Bon Air Dance & Pilates, is coming to teach some
fun, awesome classes this summer. The value is fabulous. Don’t miss out!

Creative Movement, Ages 4--5
Focus is on coordination, motor skill development, listening skills and the
development of a child’s natural creativity. Led by Allison LaNeave.
Wear comfortable clothes. 10 participants. $30 per session.
 Session 1: June 16–20, 11:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
 Session 2: June 23–27, 11:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m.

Zumba, Ages 6--9, 10--12
Zumba combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an
aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow. The name Zumba is derived from
a Columbian word meaning to move fast and have fun. Led by Marcela Charris.
Wear comfortable clothes. 10 participants. $30 per session.
 Ages 6–9: June 23–27, 3–4 p.m.
 Ages 10–12: June 23–27, 2–3 p.m.

Hip Hop, Ages 13 & Up
Popular with teens and preteens, Hip Hop is a blend of today’s high energy
“street style” movements. Music selection is age-appropriate and approved by staff.
Led by Keith Sutton. Wear comfortable clothes. 10 participants. $30.
 Dates & Time: June 23–27, 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Basketball Camp, Ages 7--15
This camp is led by our very own J.B. Brown, father of Jake and Makenzie.
J.B. played basketball in high school and for Virginia Union.
He coached the J.F. Kennedy basketball team for 25 years and has attended
basketball camps with Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Charles Barkley!
This is a great opportunity for beginner and intermediate players to work
on and improve their skills. If we have enough 13–15 year olds sign up,
we’ll add a separate camp for them. $30 per clinic.
 Dates & Time: June 23–27, 3–4 p.m.

Book Club for Kids
There’s something for everyone at this summer’s book club led by English and
Reading teacher Susie Hudgins. The format is informal; kids can come with
questions or ideas they want to discuss, or be ready to listen and jump.
The grade levels below are suggestions. Use your judgment; some kids may
be comfortable in two groups. 12 participants. $5/session;
all money from  this class goes to SRA.

2nd–4th Graders: Smart Dog by Vivian Van Velde.
Your child may read the book or have it read to him/her.

4th–6th Graders: The Outcasts of Schuyler Place by E.L. Konigsburg.
Sunday, July 6, 4–5:30 p.m.
6th–9th Graders: The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart.

Take Home a Terrarium, Ages 5--9
Sharon Baum returns this summer for this great two-day workshop.
Sharon will share her knowledge with the children as they decorate
and create their own miniature landscape. 12 participants. $40 per clinic.
 Session 1: July 1 & 3, 1–2 p.m.
 Session 2: July 8 & 10, 1–2 p.m.

Baseball Clinics, Ages 6 & Up
If you love baseball, don’t miss these clinics! Will Roberts has played 10 years
of travel baseball for the Richmond Braves National Team and will join the
UVA Cavaliers pitching staff this fall. He’ll lead two clinics:  The Hitting/Fielding
Clinic will reinforce techniques through drills and Wiffle ball games.
Bring your bat and glove. At the Pitching Clinic, learn how the pitcher’s main
job is to throw off the hitter’s timing. Bring your glove. $30 per clinic.
 Hitting/Fielding Clinic: July 7–11, 1–2 p.m.
 Pitching Clinic: July 14–18, 1–2 p.m.

Fun with Foreign Language, Ages 5--10
If you’ve ever wanted to speak another language, here’s your chance!
Learn some Espanol and Italiano with our very own talented Claudio
Ragazzi. Take one week or both. $35 per week.
 Italian: July 8–11, 4:30–5:30 p.m.
 Spanish: July 15–18, 4:30–5:30 p.m.

Intro to Karate, Ages 6 & Up
Roger Dabney from Competitive Edge Karate teaches this introduction
to the Japanese art of self-defense which focuses on basic moves.
15 participants. $30.
 Dates & Times: July 15–18, 10:15–11 a.m.

Everything Art, Grades K--2, 3--5
We are very fortunate to have Anna Spyhalski, a rising Junior Arts student
at James River High School teach this fun art class. Anna has taken outside
art classes for 10 years and has had her art recognized on a national level with
the Scholastic Art Program. Her goal is to become an art teacher.
The class will focus on drawing and painting and making fun projects! $30
 Grades K–2: July 14–18 (except Tues.), 1–2 p.m.
 Grades 3–5: July 14–18 (except Tues.), 2–3 p.m.
