Message from the President
Almost 400 years ago, Anne Bradstreet wrote, “If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” These words seem to hold true today. Spring is finally here and soon the pool will be open! Southampton is fortunate to have different types of activities for all ages in an environment that is unique to Richmond. After a very successful ice and hockey season, we are gearing up for tennis and then swimming. Thanks to Mike McVoy, Won Un and Jenny Hatch who direct those respective groups. We plan to have several camps for children this summer, including basketball, tennis and book club. The mighty Southampton Swordfish start the season on June 7 and are once again led by Head Coach Mike Peters and
his able coaches Austin Bridgforth, Cap Young, Alex Trivette, Paul Ream, Virginia Young and Anne Byrd
Mahoney. We plan to raise funds to upgrade our ice and hockey facilities, and we thank Darla Toler for
leading the Ice Boosters endeavor. You’ll hear more about this activity. Also, we do need volunteers for our work days on April 25 and May 9. Participating is a wonderful way to contribute to Southampton and help Jay Bush’s back.
If you have questions regarding Southampton or our activities, please check out our Web site at
www.sra‐fun.org; it is loaded with information. You can also contact us by phone at 272‐7401.
On behalf of your board, I thank you for being a member of Southampton and for contributing to the
overall health of the association. I hope to see you soon.
Respectfully,
Parker Hale, President
